Maria Ressa grundade för åtta år sedan nyhetssajten Rappler, som haft en kritisk hållning till president Rodrigo Dutertes. Nyhetsrapporteringen har framför allt handlat om Dutertes ”krig mot knarket”, som lett till att tusentals personer med verkliga – eller påstådda kopplingar till droghandeln dödats av polis.
Rodrigo Dutertes har sedan han kom till makten kritiserats omfattande för brott mot mänskliga rättigheter.
Rapplers redaktion har fått utstå angrepp och hot sedan 2016, framför allt via sociala medier, men också genom hotfulla besök. Verbala påhopp har också förekommit från Rodrigo Duterte själv.
Svenska Pens ordförande Jesper Bengtsson kommenterar:
- Duterte har länge sökt efter en möjlighet att tysta Maria Ressa. När jag ledde ett samtal med henne på PEN:s internationella kongress i Manilla förra året berättade hon om en rad försök att döma Rappler och henne för att de inte längre skulle kunna granska regimen. Ressa är en av de starkaste journalistiska rösterna i världen just nu. Domen mot henne är uppenbart politisk och omvärlden måste reagera kraftfullt.
Enligt rättsväsendet i Filippinerna har Maria Ressa gjort sig skyldig till förtal på nätet, rapporterar flera medier. Detta enligt en lag som kom till 2014 – ungefär två år efter att Maria Ressa publicerat artikeln på Rapple som chefredaktör.
Nu riskerar journalisten fängelse på mellan 6 månader och 6 år.
– Vi kommer att stå upp mot alla sorters attacker på pressfriheten, sa Maria Ressa, efter beskedet, enligt TT.
Svenska PEN kräver att domen mot Maria Ressa upphävs och att angreppen mot henne och tidningen Rappler omedelbart upphör.

Eight years ago, Maria Ressa founded the Rappler news site, which had a critical attitude towards President Rodrigo Dutertes. The news reporting was primarily about Duterte's "war on drugs", which has resulted in the killing of thousands of people with real – or alleged links to the drugtrade by police.
Rodrigo Dutertes has, since coming to power, been widely criticized for violating human rights. Rappler's editorial staff has endured attacks and threats since 2016, primarily through social media, but also via threatening visits. Verbal claims have also come from Rodrigo Duterte himself.

- Duterte has long sought an opportunity to silence Maria Ressa. When I led a conversation with her at PEN's International Congress in Manilla last year, she talked about a series of attempts to convict Rappler and her that they would no longer be able to review the regime. Ressa is one of the strongest journalistic voices in the world right now. The verdict against her is obviously political and the outside world must react forcefully.
According to the judiciary in the Philippines, Maria Ressa has been guilty of cyber libel, several media reports. This is according to a law that came to 2014 – about two years after Maria Ressa published the article on Rapple as editor-in-chief. Now the journalist risks imprisonment of between 6 months and 6 years.
"We will stand up to all kinds of attacks on freedom of the press," said Maria Ressa, after the message, according to TT. Swedish PEN demands that the judgment against Maria Ressa to be revoked and that the attacks against her and the Rappler magazine immediately cease.
